Toothache? Root Canal!

Hello loyal readers! This weeks blog is being brought to you by the makers of Colgate and Procter & Gamble! These fine folks claim that with the use of their products your teeth will be cleaned and healthy! Liars! Charlatans! Con-Artists! I have a really bad toothache, last molar lower right side that is super sensitive to cold and percussive forces. My normal dentist is on vacation and the stand-in convinced me to have a root canal in the office!

Right in the office!? I thought that would be amazing! Yeah, hell no. It was anything but! I have had one other root canal in my life and it wasn’t anything like that! I am in so much pain that I can barely stand it. We are due to leave on a 9 day camping trip on Friday. I will be in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan far from any REAL dentist! What fun!

Pray for me.

Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers out there that are present in their children’s lives! We deserve a day off to cook on the grill and mow the lawn and clean the garage! Right? Hell yeah!

Speaking of our children, mine are in Band and this year has been a trying one for them. Their band instructor has retired and the new instructors are bringing a new perspective to the fray and the kids are rebelling. On top of that my son, a senior this fall, will have his schedule tossed around. He is being forced to choose between Band, his favorite class, and the Early College Program! WTF!! The Anchor Bay School District is really screwing with the kids and kicking them when they are down! I am beyond pissed and this really isn’t the place to let it fly.

Happier News! Book 2: New Homestead is flying right along, not sure if I’ll be able to make my deadline of July 1st, but I am trying my hardest to get it done.

Book 2 Outline Is Complete!!

Hello loyal readers! I have some great news this week. I have completed the outline for New Homestead, book 2 in the Hawkins Family Series. Writing has taken over the drivers seat and I am working furiously to get the book done by July 1st! It seems doable and I really want to have July and August available for proofreading and editing.

In other news, my wife’s car has been acting flaky lately and the check engine light finally came on. Turns out that the code, P0199 is for a Turbocharger under boost. It could be a costly repair. Stay tuned for more updates as they arrive.

Writing Goals

Hello faithful reader! I am proud to say that I have been able to buckle down and write more of the second novel, New Homestead! I have consistently written for 3 days straight for a total of 11 hours. and that is awesome! I recently read a post on Facebook that stated to become a more prolific and proficient writer is to actually schedule time on a calendar to write. I have tried and tried to accomplish this goal, but it had eluded me. I feel most inspired when I am sitting outside, away from distractions (phone, tablet, tv, family), so I purchased an EZ Up Canopy and have it mounted to my deck. This is how I was able to write consistently in my first novel, Home Bound. Well, as time marches on, the original canopy started to show it’s age and wear. We threw it out. So I have been without a canopy all year. Now that I have a new one, the creative juices are flowing!

I have completed the novel up to chapter 36, and I am nearing completion of the outline chapters. Yeah, reader, organic storytelling/writing isn’t the path for me. If I plot out a rough outline for each chapter, then the process becomes infinitely easier for me to complete. I don’t have to waste time thinking about what is going to happen next, since I’ve already done that! I just need to fill in the blanks!

Writing weekly in this blog is also helping me hone my writing chops. My typing skills are still atrocious. I’m not a hunt and peck typist, but I have a tendency to type faster than my fingers can keep up. The letters are there, but in the wrong order. I guess I have a kind of typing dyslexia? In the words of Pooh Bear, Oh Bother!

Memorial Day Ruminations

Good afternoon loyal readers! Well, our first camping trip of the year is in the history books. We just got back from spending 3 days and nights at the Pine Ridge RV Resort in Frankenmuth, MI. For more information, follow this link: http://huaiwarp.com/Camping/Trips/TripsPage41.html

As a shakedown cruise, I would have preferred to stayed somewhere closer, especially since we had to get home quickly/early on Monday to my kids to the marching band line up time before the parade.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance and to honor those members of the military that have given their life to protect the liberties that we hold dear. I have several ancestors and extended members of my family that have served in varying branches of the armed forces. I have traced my family line back to the mid 1800’s and know which wars they have fought. From WWI, and WWII to Vietnam, my family has been blessed to have our soldiers come home safely.

All gave some, some gave all. Thank you to those that died to protect our freedoms!

I DID IT!!! I’M ALIVE!!

Hello faithful readers! I’m back after the hike of doom! 16.5 miles of the hottest, dustiest, and most grueling trail of my life! I wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything!

It was hot, and dry. It was physically and mentally exhausting. It was exhilarating and most of all, worthwhile! I am so sore! My feet and calves are screaming. I thought I had 2 blisters, when in fact I have 5! Have no fear, they are not debilitating.

The scouts took care of me by calling back to the adult group and telling me to get my inhaler out, a big hill was in my near future! They were right 90% of the time and they waited patiently for me to catch my breath at the top!

We did have one casualty. One of the scouts twisted his ankle at mile 5 of 10. He had to hobble back the remaining 5 miles. The other scouts took his pack and divided it up amongst themselves to help him out. I spent time with him talking about all things comics. From the DC television shows to the expanded Marvel Cinematic universe. It seemed to take his mind off of the injury and the remaining distance back to camp.

The next day we were to complete the remaining 6.5 miles. The injured scout was only able to complete the first 2 miles before throwing in the towel. Our scoutmaster and his son, along with the injured scout hiked back to camp and waited for us.

I was asked to take the lead and set the pace, since I became the slowest and oldest of the group. I asked one of the scouts who was carrying a speaker and playing music for us, to put on Billie Jean. They all thought me crazy, but at 120 beats per minute, it is the perfect song to hike to! I stepped off at a blazing 3.5 miles per hour and the scouts were amazed this old man had it in him! 2 hours later we were done! We stopped for a snack and some water breaks. But afterward, EVERYONE was winded!

The camper is home and being dewinterized and packed for the trip to Frankenmuth, MI. My son and daughter have stepped up and are taking over some of the jobs for me, since I am still feeling the effects of the hike days later. They are now realizing just how much I do for the camper and for them in general! Maybe now is the time for me play the injured card more often!

The weather is taking a break from being warm and heading back to early springtime. The forecast is calling for rain and highs in the low 60’s for the weekend. I would have killed for that during the hike! Instead we had to deal with mid to high 80’s! Well, that’s Michigan for ya!

Chief Pontiac Trail Hike – Post Trail Report

Day 1:

We stepped off on our hike the morning of May 22, 2021 at 8:30am.  We proceeded North across the parking lot and learned how to cross the road properly with a large group of people.  The first point of interest that we encountered the Girl Scout sign.  The very first Girl Scout round up was held at Highland Park in 1956.  During the round up the participants consumed over 1 million chicken eggs!  The seating arena was built by the Army Corp of engineers and was estimated to seat over 10,000 girl scouts!  Oscar winning actor, Charleton Heston was flown in via helicopter for the event as well.  We continued our hike until we came to a bridge where we stopped and listened to the sounds of nature.  I heard several red winged black birds, robins, various frogs and small single engine plane overhead.  We continued on until we came to the first of many Domino Hills.  We had to send each person down one at a time, to prevent everyone from slipping and falling.  The scouts enjoyed calling back to me to get the “puffer out, there’s a big hill ahead!”  I call my asthma inhaler a puffer and had it close at hand for the big hills!  We crossed under South Duck Lake Road via a tunnel.  This trail is used by horseback riders, and they would have to dismount to cross, since the ceiling isn’t high enough for both rider and horse.  One of our scouts, Cody, couldn’t see anything inside the tunnel because he forgot to take off his sunglasses!  Two hours into the hike we had already experiences a couple of very brief rain showers.  With the heat and stagnant air flow, the rain felt good!  We continued on, climbing hills and carefully descending until the last hill before our lunch break when Jacob Elbode rolled his ankle.  At 12:18pm we stopped for lunch at shooting range/dog training facility.  The scouts got to pet some really pretty, but expensive puppies.  After lunch and on our return trip, the other scouts saw that their fellow was in need, and they offered to divide up his pack to lighten the load on his injured foot.  We made it back to camp just after 5pm.  Almost nine hours of hiking and small breaks and we are done with day 1!

Day 2:

We stepped off at approximately 8:17am.  Jacob tried to finish out the hike, but his ankle was still hurting him, so he had to bow out at 2 miles in.  As the oldest and most out of shape person there I was asked by the scouts to set the pace for the rest of the hike.  I asked them to play a song for me, Billy Jean by Michael Jackson.  It has a steady 120 beats per minute rhythm and I have trained to that song in the past.  I took of at a brisk 3mph and the I could hear the scouts’ amazement at “the old man’s speed!”  Even the adults remarked, “Where was this speed and energy yesterday?”  From that point on we were flying along.  The boardwalk sections were interesting but gave me a claustrophobic feel.  The phragmites stood so tall around us that we couldn’t see or hear any wildlife.  We stopped near the crossroads to the tunnel and looked for turtles in the swamps.  I spotted a moss covered “rope” sunning itself at the end of a log.  Turns out that rope was a snake, but we couldn’t determine the species due to the pond scum/algae/moss covering it.  Still a cool sight!  We stopped again for a short meal and water break near the 5-mile mark.  We finished the hike after almost 3.5 hours and came away with only 5 blisters!  This was a wonderful adventure and I am very happy to have completed it!

Checking In…Before Stepping Off!

Hello readers! Well, I am gearing up for the hike of my life. This new adventure will be the greatest test of my physicality at this age. Which for the sake of privacy, we’ll say is about mid-40’s. I have packed and repacked my backpack. I have whittled down the amount of gear that I will be hiking with. I have also decided that I will be keeping some gear in the truck, since the trek is an out and back, I won’t need to carry everything. I will need to bring 4 liters of water in addition to snacks/lunch, tent, and bedroll (sleeping bag, and ground pad). All totaled up it is 26.6lbs. Doesn’t sound like much, but I have completed several practice “hikes” on my treadmill and I can tell you that it is a lot!

In addition to the hike I have contacted my ophthalmologist and asked about my eye condition. The recommended a type of OTC eye drops that contain glycol and combats my Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). Apparently I just don’t blink enough! I stopped at my local Meijer and bought a double pack of Systene. After a week of daily (almost hourly use) I can feel a difference! This improvement has started giving me a boost to continue work on the novel. The deadline of June 30th is looming large. *UPDATE: 11/06/2023 my CVS was due to the Blue Blocker coating on my glasses and was causing extreme eye fatigue. Once I received a new set of glasses without the coating, my CVS vanished!

My wife’s car has been in and out of the mechanic and we are out over $600, still having some minor issues. Son’s car is now having issues, a clunking sound when going over bumps. Sounds like tie rods. My truck has an exhaust leak near the manifold so that will need to be addressed.

The restoration company has come out and inspected the leaking chimney and they say that they can fix it! Whoo hoo!

All of these developments are stress I don’t need and can’t really control. I have been doing a lot of deep breathing and mental exercises telling myself that I can’t control everything, I can only control myself. One thing at a time, one foot step at a time. Baby steps.

Time Is Not On My Side

Well this last week has been pretty interesting. I spent the weekend not doing too much in the way of writing, or home improvements. I did, however, try to get my wedding ring resized. No dice. IT has a pattern on it and the jeweler said, nope, sorry. I also spent some time at the my mother’s and mother-in-law’s houses on Sunday! Happy Mother’s day to all of the mothers out there. I bought my mom new porch lights and hung them for her, then worked on my brother’s lawn mower(s).

Then we relocated to my mother-in-law’s house and did some gardening in the rain. I also hung a new porch light for her as well!

All that being said, I didn’t have much time for writing this weekend. I am somewhat free this weekend but I am booked solid for the next two weekends after that!

I have a scout trip planned and then a family camping trip. The scout trip will be a 16 mile hike on the Chief Pontiac Trail with full packs. Yeah. I’m a stereotypical middle aged guy who sits all day as a computer/IT programmer type. I fear that looming heart attack on the next ridge. I will be taking my time and using as much down time as possible. I can do two-three miles but will need a 10-20 minute break afterwards.

THEN once I get home I will need to get the camper home and dewinterized! That is a 20+ step process as it is! Hopefully it won’t need any repairs.

And of course there is the looming deadline to get my novel done by the end of June. I have some much to write but my eyesight is giving me issues and I can’t spend much time staring at the screen. I am focusing on the keyboard as I type this instead of the screen like I normally do.

All of that boils down to stress. Stress that I don’t need nor want. Stress that is causing me to have digestion issues. Life also has a way of tossing you curve balls. My wife’s car needs work, the house is leaking water near the chimney and I have a restoration company coming out to look at it. Just one thing after another.

Sorry for the long gripe but I just needed to get some of this off of my chest.

Writing With Eye Issues

Hello loyal reader, I am continuing to write this blog to hone my writing skills and to keep a rudimentary journal of my life for my kids and future generations.

I had a surgical procedure performed on my left eye last Friday, April 30th. It was relatively minor, just a Chalazion (pronounced with a SH sound) that was growing out of the lower left corner of my eye lid. It was a damn nuisance, and I am glad that it is gone. I am now left with a constant dull pain every time I blink but it is diminishing. Outside of that, my vision in my left eye is still giving me trouble. It appears that I suffer from an astigmatism that is aggravated by staring at my iPhone and iPad. I don’t seem to have any issues with it when I stare at my computer screen. There is a name for it, Computer Vision Syndrome.

Apparently it is mostly due to a decrease in blinking and the eye drying out along with constant focus on an object too close to the face. I already suffer from dry eyes and I recognize the time spent at the computer screen is excessive.

To combat this issue, the Dr’s suggest implementing the 20-20-20 rule I found at the Cleveland Clinic website. It states that after 20 minutes of screen time I should look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. 20-20-20. Seems pretty easy. I have already tried this for one day, and I am skeptical but hopeful. The dartboard hanging on the opposite wall is over 20 feet away but the numbers are clearly readable. That is my focal point. Now to remember to look over there every twenty minutes.

In addition to the 20-20-20 rule, I should also take a 15 minute break for every 2 hours of screen time and blink WAY more often. Talk about a hassle. I have to be conscious of how much I blink in a given day! Exhausting!

As for this weekend, I did get some writing in. It was quite difficult as I had just had my eye procedure and my astigmatism was flaring really badly. I think it may have been a combination of the glare, not blinking enough and the procedure. I didn’t let it stop me though! The prison story line/plot is moving along nicely. I think I need to rewrite a few chapters a bit better but otherwise it is pretty good. I completed approximately 15 pages and am sitting in the low 200 page range! Whoo-hoo! Progress!

More home improvements

Well howdy and welcome! The improvements at our little home have been progressing. We just had the 20+ yr old water heater replaced with a brand new one. Nothing wrong with the old one, just age and we knew were on borrowed time. Now we have an upgraded larger tank! Whoo hoo! 50 gallons of hot water! Maybe now we can all have showers without someone (me) having to take a cold one!

The deck replacement has been postponed a week or so, due to the snow that we got last week! Our contractor has asked me to pull the permits and I have everything in order except some of the finer details. Once I have those I can submit the permit and hopefully get that project over and done with!

I have also been working diligently on my novel, Book 2 of the Hawkins family adventures, New Homestead. I have settled on an opposing view from the local prison and will be bringing the two groups on a collision course that will determine the future of New Baltimore! Oooh, sounds ominous. It kind of is and isn’t. You’ll just have to read it and find out!

As for the woodworking projects, everything is pretty much on hold due to the skyrocketing lumber prices! I read an article that stated that the amount of lumber needed for a 200 sq ft deck in April 2020 would have cost $628, where as in April 2021 it would cost $3968!!! WTF!! Is this gold plated lumber? Holy Hell Batman! So yeah, that’s that, for now.

Cabin update: Apparently the plumbing has been fixed, although I would like to go up there to test it and get some more writing done. Also, I will be upgrading the cable to include phone and internet. Time to update the cabin amenities as well!

Home improvements

Well, here we are on a Wednesday afternoon thinking back to the previous weekend. My back and shoulders ache just looking at the improvements we made to our little suburban homestead.

Every light fixture in the kitchen has been replaced. The former flush mount over the sink has been swapped out to a pendant light. The two flush mounts in the middle of the ceiling and near the pantry, also replaced. The chandelier over the table? Yep, replaced that too. The new “chandelier” would be more at home over a bar or island, but it looks good. The last one would be in the laundry room. Changed 1 for 1, but to match the rest of the lights.

Then there’s the living room. 15′ vaulted great room ceiling. 3′ down rod ceiling fan. Increased size from 48″ to 62″. Had to replace the ceiling mount bracket because of the drastic angle of greater than 16 degrees!

Lastly, the foyer light. Changed from a simple white pendant fixture to the new dark bronze one that now adorns the entrance way.

I figure that I must have climbed up the step ladder ~60 times. Let’s not forget the 12′ A frame ladder, which I used to swap out the ceiling fan! About 20 or so times.

What was it all for? It was done for my wife, whom I love and adore. It was done to spruce up the house. It was done to update the 20+ year old fixtures and bring my home into the 21st century!

Happy Wife, Happy Life. Sore back, barking dogs? Yeah those too.

Springtime is here!

Well the weather is starting to warm up here, and I my son has cut the grass for the first time this year! My wife and I purchased a cantilevered umbrella with stand and set it up on the deck. I even transplanted my tiny vegetable garden to the raised bed. I am jazzed by the warmer weather and can’t wait to get outside and start writing!

On other fronts, my wife attempted to have a weekend away while leaving the kids at home. Alone. We left Friday evening and made the three hour drive to the cabin. Upon arrival and plugging in the pump, I found that it wouldn’t build up pressure! WTF! My mother had just been there a day before and had a plumber out to fix a leak now there was another one! Dammit! On top of that, my “puppy” didn’t know how to dog. She waited until 1am to tell me that she needs to go pee! Could she have done it before then? Absolutely. Did she pee the 3 other times I let out the older dog? Nope. So with a restless nights sleep, no water, and a visibly frustrated and bored wife, we came home.

Now the drive home was much better than the drive up. I googled a route that avoided the highway and we set out. The drive took us only a half hour longer, but it was pretty cool! We saw the Deer Park, now closed, crossed the Saginaw River at Independence Bridge and saw an awesome battleship? We stumbled upon the Psycho house with hearse and mannequins in the windows. We also got to travel through some towns and villages that are FAR off the beaten path. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

After all that, it is back to the grind. Maybe we can try again, but this time with water.

Just noticed something

Okay, while I was just updating the blog files (tags and categories), I just saw that I have 6 consecutive months of blog entries! That is freaking awesome! I had started this blog WAY back in 2009, when I created the first website, Josh’s Space Page, and tried out the blogging feature.

5 years later…came my foray into the blogosphere with three consecutive months of entries. Albeit only 2-3 a month, but hey, it’s the thought that counts, right?

From then on till 2016 it was pretty sporadic, but then the great drought started. No new posts from July 2016 until July 2019. I felt the need to let the rest of the world know about the passing of my beloved family pet, Brandy. From then on, I kept vowing to get on a schedule of creating blog entries. It has been a struggle. But since then I have finished some pretty amazing projects in my wood shop, published a novel, and continued to raise two pretty awesome kids.

To quote Ian Malcome of Jurassic Park, “Life finds a way.”

The Life and Accomplishments of Chief Pontiac

Chief Pontiac was born circa 1720 on the Maumee River (now in Ohio), in the Great Lakes region of the United States.  His given Odawa (Ottawa) name was Obwandiyag.  Very little is known of his early life, but by the year 1755 he had become the Odawa tribal chief.  The Seven Year’s War, also called the French and Indian War started in 1754 and ended in 1763.  This was an imperial war between British and French forces over control of the Ohio territory.  The war pitted the British colonists, which included a young George Washington, and their Native American allies against the French colonists and their Native American allies.

Chief Pontiac had a talent for strategic planning which enabled him to become a leader of a confederacy between the Ottawa, the Potawatomi, and the Ojibwa tribes.  During the French and Indian War he met Major Robert Rogers on his way to Michilimackinac.  Pontiac agreed to let the British troops pass through their lands unmolested on the condition that he be treated with respect.  The respect was to last.  In 1762, Pontiac enlisted the support from almost every Native American tribe from Lake Superior to the lower Mississippi for a joint campaign to expel the British forces.  Chief Pontiac arranged for each tribe to attach their nearest fort in May 1763 and then combine to wipe out any undefended settlements.  The British called this “Pontiac’s Conspiracy”.  Chief Pontiac’s daring and courageous leader elected to capture the city of Detroit with a force of 300 members of different tribes and it is for this action that he is particularly remembered.

In July of 1766, Chief Pontiac and the British Superintendent of Indian Affairs negotiated an end to the war.  Though the Native Americans were unable to force the British out of the Great Lakes region, the uprising demonstrated the possibility of multi-tribal cooperation in the struggle against European colonialism.

Chief Pontiac’s success led him to believe that he was the leader of a large group of Native Americans and he began to act as an absolute ruler.  By the year 1768 he had gone from a great leader to a man without a home.  On April 20, 1769, he was murdered by the nephew of Chief Makatchinga, Chief of the Peoria tribe of the Illinois Confederation, near Cahokia, Illinois.

Coronavirus status update

Well, that sucked. Not as bad as some, but still sucked. My headache raged all night long. It was a pounding, painful headache, more like a dull pressure ache. My temperature topped out at 100.4 at about 5am. I finally broke and took some Acetaminophen for the pain. I finally got it under control around 10am and was feeling much better and more like normal around noon.

Let’s hope that we are good from here on out.

Coronavirus vaccination

Well, I feel like a turd. I received the Johnson & Johnson one shot today at 11am, and as of 4pm, I have a slight headache and my teeth hurt. Which is really weird. My ears/head is hot, not feverish, but really warm and my neck is feeling tight. Tighter than usual. I am also trying not to take any medication for the pain/possible fever as I don’t want my immune system to be hampered. Most folks have complained about shoulder/arm pain (injection site pain), but my shoulder is fine. So altogether not that great. I’m hoping that as time goes on I’ll feel better. I will definitely check in tomorrow and post an update.

New Homestead news and more upgrades

Well sports fans, I have committed to completing book 2 of the Hawkins Family Survival Series by August 31 , 2021!! I have created a temporary cover and have posted it on Amazon! I even setup a pre order page as well! Hopefully by setting a deadline it will motivate me to get my ass in gear! I have already started on the alternate plot line from the prison! I’m 3 chapters along that path and I am already contemplating going back to do some re-writes. I have to hold horse in check, because I am also trying a new methodology when it comes to writing. As a perfectionist it is SUPER tempting to fix the errors and go back to previously written material to fix a continuity error or character flaw. That path only leads to hate and aggression and a self loathing that does nobody any good. Instead, I will create a temporary document and make a notes of what I think needs to be changed and why. If I know the page number then I will include that as well! Hopefully this will allow me to plow forward and get the story written, then during the rewrite/editing I can fix any booboos! I have been fighting this battle all along the way and even during the first book! This should help win the battle and the war and get me on the path of more stories and more books to release!

As for the upgrades, my stupid ISP is forcing me to update my cable modem and since we have our phone (land line) over IP, I have to shell out even more money!! To top it all off, Comcast didn’t even warn us! Made for a pretty shitty start to my day! Oh well, maybe I can write off on my taxes as an office upgrade! We’ll see!

Exciting News!

Hello folks! Great news!  My wife and I have decided that we (I) would like to move in 3 years time!  We are going ahead with some minor home improvements such as new counters and sinks in the kitchens and bathrooms, a new concrete patio, updated carriage lights and some other cosmetic improvements inside!  I am stoked!  I have already started looking at downsizing some of my collections to prepare for the move.  I have already tossed some old models (Titanic and a Saturn V), and I have earmarked my KREO Transformer sets as going bye.  I do have some Star Wars Plates that will not be making the move, nor will my pool table (maybe).

We are looking at moving to a more rural area with 5-10 acres of wooded land.  I want a pole barn and some property to raise some chickens and a garden on in addition to having a first floor study for work and writing.  The rest of it I leave to my wife.  I will defer to her needs, wants and tastes.  She is not as excited as I am.  Her sister is over the moon since she and her husband have also been looking at land to build on/move to.  She would like us to buy a huge lot ~60 acres or more, and then split it and we BOTH build on it.  That is a little bit more daunting and will cost more $$$!

I am excited and totally on board with updating the house, which the wife loves as well.

Still need to get back to writing.  Too many things keep me from devoting the time to the novel.  Like life, death and taxes!
