UPGRADES!!!

Well, I decided that it’s time to pull the trigger and upgrade this site to the next level of support. That includes an upgraded WordPress Blog site!! I am going to be playing with this for a while.

The other cool upgrades include the ability to use CGI, PHP and an email/calendar system! I am stoked to try the PHP and CGI access to update the camping site to a true database and if I can get that to work then I will be looking at creating a library database page too!

Now if anyone wants to comment you can! Hope to hear from you soon!

Gojira!!!

Busy, busy, busy!

Hello folks!

Sorry for not being as present as I wanted in the last month but I have been uber busy!  I have been hard at work on finishing up the Godzilla site and I have taken on updating the separate Scout site bsa-troop211.org I created for my son’s Boy Scout troop.  I had started it with the intention of someone else taking it on and finishing and maintaining it. Well, that didn’t happen.  So I am now working on updating the contact info and creating a whole bunch of new Merit Badge pages.  It is very daunting.

On the novel front:

Well, I have had some pretty decent heart to hearts with my wife and I have decided to restructure the narrative to the pattern I used in the first novel.  Chapter 1 – Main Character Point of View, Chapter 2 – Antagonist Character Point of View, then back to MC POV and then to AC POV…  I am deep in creating a whole new set of chapters and storylines.  It is really clearing my head and giving me a drive to complete this story.  It feels good and I just need to get an outline done.  Then I can work on fleshing it out fully.  I have also decided not to let “my fans” dictate which characters are going to be in my stories.  I can’t please everyone all the time.  I am writing MY story, not theirs.

Till next time!

All Things Godzilla and Book 2 update

Good Evening sports fans!

Sorry I haven’t been blogging much.  I have been knee deep in updating the Godzilla aside of the website and fixing the menu system.  Along with that I have been dealing some personal health and vehicle issues.  Between all that it’s Girl Scout cookie season and we are having a deep freeze here in Michigan.  I have been battling a glacier on my front porch and an icy waterfall over the door.  Not fun, totally not recommend.

As far as Book 2 New Homestead goes, I am feeling pretty guilty and anxious about going back to the figurative drawing board.  I just don’t feel that there is enough conflict or driving plot keeping the reader engaged.  I think I am going to (again) and re order the events.  I have been having a terrible time describing the passage of time without leaving something out.  I guess I really need to decide if I am going to document each day/week or just skip a few days here and there.  I am also going to rework a specific idea/thought regarding the food situation.  I have been writing about how I hope the community would be versus how it actually would be.

Ugh.  I feel bad about it, but I also feel a bit optimistic!

Until next time!

Feeling Down and Over Whelmed….

Well sports fans, I went up north and got only a small bit accomplished.  Totally feeling like it was a waste of time.  I did get about 20 pages written and modified the length of some chapters.  I don’t know.  I am really feeling like I should just throw in the towel on this.  It just doesn’t feel right.  I don’t have the drive to complete this one, like I did the first one.  The plot and story are sound but it’s is a much slower pace than the first book and I am afraid that I will lose readers and fans.

The first book was a labor of love and basically sprouted from the real-life plan to walk home 54 miles, rendezvous with my wife and get my kids in the event of a disaster that prevented me from using my vehicle.  The story evolved from there.  I alternated chapters which kept the reader engaged, this 2nd novel follows the main character and sprinkles in some alternate chapters.  I’m not sure that anyone would like it.  I am on page 210 and almost 2/3’s of the way through.  The action will be heating up from here on out and will end on a cliff hanger.  Should I finish?  Should I start over?  Should I just quit and give up dreaming of being a novelist?

I don’t know.

Godzilla, and On Writing

Well, howdy and good day to you all.

I have been hard at work updating and creating new code and webpages for the Godzilla sub-site, and I must say that it is looking pretty awesome!  I have spent man y hours working on the films entries as well as the table of films.  32 different movies, across 60+ years!  Holy cow, folks! That is quite the legacy!

As far as writing is concerned, I have been getting the urge to write in my 2nd novel again.  I am just having a hard time finding the right time and place.  I need to be alone, undisturbed, and with any distractions, apart from my music of course.  I have time today, but I am yearning for a trip up to the cabin for the alone-ness, and the beauty of nature.  I told my wife that I’d like to go up next weekend and she agreed.  Whoopee!  I get to go 3 hours north and be alone with my thoughts and books!  I am so looking forward to it! I had an interesting thought the other night about changing my Hawkins story from a series to a trilogy and then a new family dealing with Yellowstone and New Madrid as a separate trilogy!  I like that idea!

Apart from all of that, I am also working on finishing my travel Shut the Box game to leave at the cabin for my niece and nephew to play with.  It’s almost done.  Still needs to be stained and decaled.

I have also started reading again.  I have been stalling on Bobby Akart’s Geostorm Book Two: The Pulse.  I started it early in 2020 and haven’t picked it back up till now.  Not sure why I put it down in the first place.  I did receive a new book for Christmas from a dear friend, Ready Player Two.  I read the first few pages and I want to read more, but alas, it is at the bottom of To Read pile….

Such is life.

The Homepage is under construction!

Well, the decision has been made.  I am adding a Woodworking page to catalog all of my projects and a comprehensive, for me, Godzilla sub-site!

The King of the Monsters!  The Big G!  The original celluloid monster from the 1950’s!  I have always like the movies and even have some of the tie in books and comics!

My wood working page will be an ode to projects of the past and present.  I want to document the projects and maybe even create a Sketch Up file and post it as well.

In other news, the US is heading down a path that will soon have a fork in it.  I believe that there will come a time when the future of this country will be faced with going down one path that leads towards destruction and the other towards salvation.  I am not sure which path the future holds.  But I do know that I will strive to protect my family in the best way possible.  I pray that we all come out of this better for the experience.

Website updates…..again.

Good Morning!

I had a great idea last night as I was drifting off to slumber land.  I thought that it would be neat to add a section to the site that documents my wood working projects!  I am thinking of a drop down list of all of the projects and a single page, with photos of everything that I have ever made!  I am unsure if I should include any rough construction type projects, like the basement shelves and work benches….I guess I will figure that out later.

I am also on the fence regarding whether or not to go ahead with the Godzilla page.  I wanted to have a comprehensive sub-site that documents each movie, but with Wikipedia and several other sites, it seems superfluous.  I may just remove it.

The Family Tree sub-site is still under construction and I plan to complete that this year.

The Campgrounds sub-site will be renamed to Camping and updated with the 2020 camping trips. I was also informed by my blushing bride that I had missed a trip in 2018 or 2017.

Last but not least is the Survival Weekly Magazine sub-site.  I have to complete the conversion of the HTML to PDF’s.  That is also something to complete this year.

On the woodworking front, I am thinking of creating a much beefier and bigger shoe rack for the closet.  I am thinking that it should be high enough to slide the largest ammo boxes on the bottom and to include the boots next to them, then determine the rest of the height to just under the shelf.  I am thinking of using pine and a dark stain.  The major joint and construction will include a rabbeted back, and dadoed shelf supports with a possible staggered? dado center support.  Not sure of the correct terminology for that.  Basically, they will slide into each other like one of those dinosaur puzzles.  Adam Savage did something similar in one of his one day builds.

New Year’s Day 2021 and not 2020 pt 2!

Happy New Year EVERYONE!

Well, COVID is still here and it has ruined yet another of our families traditions. But in an effort to continue to keep our 96-ish year old grandmother alive, we will stay home. Some more. Again. Crap.

I’m sore from virtual golf, haven’t swung a club since June of 2020, seems so long ago.  I need to get into shape.  The shape I am in, round, is no good for the future.

I resolve to lose weight this year, and to structure my life so that I can woodwork, write, read, work out, and maybe play some video games….

I also resolve to organize the areas of my life and clean out the clutter.  That means the garage, and the basement. Here we go, 2021!  Hooray!

Happy New Year! Thank GOD 2020 is over! Right?

Well faithful readers, we have made it to the end of this wretched year! Lets review, shall we?

January – We were treated to massively damaging wild fires in Australia, that ravaged 18.6 million acres.  The fires raged for nearly 80 days, displacing or killing nearly 3 billion animals!

February – We all thought that we were going to war with Iran to start WWIII!  Thank goodness that Coronavirus hit and put the kibosh on that party! My daughter got her braces off!

March – Oh yeah.  Coronavirus. Turns out it was much more dangerous than previously thought.  Time for lock down! My son got his license and car on March 13th! School is closed! We baked bread and Corned Beef!

April – Well shit.  The fan is spinning and the shit is in the launcher, just waiting for someone to pull the trigger.  Schools have been closed and the kids are ALL home schooled now! We had a virtual Scout camp out in our backyards! Built a vegetable garden in the backyard!

May – Black Lives Matter. I believe that they do. As do all lives. Should we riot? Absolutely not! Oh so we are doing this now? Who’s Aunt Eefa?  Oh, Antifa! Great.  Who invited these guys? Ah screw it, let’s all work from home! What? Go camping?  Sure, on Memorial Day Weekend at Higgins Lake KOA? I’m in!

June – School’s out for summer! Fixed brother’s car door handle, drove through daughter’s graduation from middle school to high school, finished Mom’s lighthouse, did the book cover a day challenge (and loved it!), and finished my bookcases project! Camping again? Sure, at Traverse City RV Resort?  Let’s go!

July – Missing Brandy, been gone a year and still hurts. CPL class? Why?  BLM and Antifa, oh shit, let’s do it! Get into reloading? Hell yeah! Political ads and turmoil have started. Loaded my first rounds and got my first freedom seed spreader! 2nd wave of Covid-19 has started. Great.

August – Voted in the Primary elections.  Fat lot of good that’ll do. Camping again?!? Where? Drummond Island? Hmmm…the prospect of being on an island during a freaking global pandemic does sound promising. Let’s do it!  20 year anniversary to my beloved wife! Here’s to 20 more! Huge explosion in Beirut at port. Ammonium Nitrate is not for playing around with. Wildfires out west in Oregon and California make the skies all red in Michigan!  No band camp this year.

September -Turned 45! Finally built my reloading bench! Got my CPL! Working on my wood shop! Started my novel again! Kids are back to school!  Virtually….

October – Halloween!  Many Biden and Trump costumes, glad to see the kids out and about. Got to see the marching band on the field! Hooray!

November – Can we just say WTF for the election and just leave it at that? Happy Thanksgiving? Yeah sure, but it was a bit weird having it at home but we made the best of it with our wedding China and my son’s girlfriend participated!

December – Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and welcome to the third wave of Covid-19!  Also first round of official vaccinations are sent out and administered.

I’m ready for 2021!

It’s Done! The Shut the Box Remaster is here!

Good Morning Folks!

I have completed my month long project of resurrecting a dice game that I made as a freshman/sophomore in high school wood shop. It is called Shut the Box and I made one that was, in my opinion, crap! It only had 8 of the original 9 flappers and was full of mistakes made by my impatient younger self.

I spent a great deal of time working on making this one bigger and better in every way. I took my time and made sure that EVERY measurement was correct before any cut was made, I still made a few, but anyone would be hard pressed to find them! There are now 12 flappers, which increases the difficulty of the game, and the lid fits MUCH better! My wife also assisted in creating the numbers and name of the game on the lid with her Cricut! Family and friends have said that it looks professionally made! What a compliment!

The project differs from the original in that I used box joints instead of miters, (I hate mitered joints!) along with felt inside the dice storage box, as well as a difference in wood selected. I used Pine instead of Oak and a Golden Oak stain to make the grain pop! I also routed the top of the flappers with a round over bit and placed spacing washers between each one.  I am so happy with it!

So what is going to be my next project? A travel version!

Merry Christmas!

Just a quick note to wish all of my friends and family a very Merry Christmas!

In this time of Covid-19 and political unrest, it is best to take some time with your immediate family to cherish the time you have with them.

I wish the peace of God upon all of you and love you all!

I wanna work with wood, but I wanna write too!

Good day fellows!  I have some great news!  I just added two more LED shop lights to my garage and it is super bright out there now!  I love it!  I also am getting super excited about working out there, but it makes me feel guilty.  I have been focusing my thoughts and time on my shop and not my writing.  I need to refocus and get that done, but I really want to work in my shop!  Ugh.

Time management is my enemy, my bane, my eternal adversary!  How can I find the time to work in my shop and work on my novel?  There’s just not enough time in the day.  I used to write while I “worked” but my new-ish job doesn’t allow me that luxury.

In other news, my daughter will be making her Confirmation tomorrow, and I am pretty peeved at the church.  It seems that our “priest” doesn’t want to wear a mask while giving mass to a large amount of people!!  WTF?!?!  In this stage of the pandemic, I cannot believe that this “man of the cloth” would be making the conscious decision to possibly infect a large gathering of citizens!!  I am having my daughter wear her mask the entire time.  No communion, no exceptions.  Ok, sorry.  Rant done.

Christmas is coming and I am feeling pretty good, right now.  We shall see if that changes…till next time!

Scouts, Table Saws and MORE!

Howdy friends, I’m back for today’s post. I have been undertaking a major update to the Troop 211 scout website, found here: bsa-troop211.org  I had decided to overhaul the menu/link/navigation system. I like it better now!  I have also taken on the burden of creating more content for the website in order to make if complete.  I can’t leave the troop with a half finished website!

In other news, I have been unhappy with my Craftsman Table Saw. It has always given me troubles when starting, and the fence is a nightmare. Well, Youtube to the rescue! I watched several videos on how to properly maintain the work surface, car wax!  Who knew? And I took the motor apart to clean it and lube the bearings. Guess what? It starts when I flip the switch! I no longer have to lean over the table and lift the motor to get it going! Awesome! I am totally ready for some more woodworking projects.

In addition to the changes to the scout website, I am rolling out a few to this site as well. If some of the links don’t work, please use this link to the old main page: hua.iwarp.com/index-old.html

Till next time!

Scouts, Stories, and Sciatica! Oh My!

Well, good morning folks!  I spent a great deal of time yesterday working on the website HTML code for the troop!  I had some terrible issues with the one aspect of a table that lists all of our Eagle Scouts!  About an hour was spent just working on the background to the table!!  I have also identified 6 other pages that need to be created and I am toying with the idea of redesigning the over all look of the pages too.  I may be biting off more than I can chew!

I have created a new story plotter doc because of an awesome dream I had!  I won’t give it away, just yet, because after all it is a work in progress.  Suffice it to say, it is a dual world, fantasy, sci-fi, kinda bent to it!

Lastly, my right hip is acting up again, this time from the top of my hip bone and I have been pounding ibuprofen pretty regularly, and am now switching to Tylenol for arthritis.  The new medication seems to be helping, but only slightly.

That’s all for today, and I will be desperately trying to get back into the second novel, New Homestead!  I want to complete the first draft by Christmas!

Happy Thanksgiving and December!

Apologies, but it’s been a hectic month.  With all of the hullabaloo about the election, the lack of protests and the never-ending fear of the Coronavirus it has been hard to keep finding the drive to continue writing.  I did take a weekend and secluded myself to my cabin with the idea to get back into the follow up novel to Home Bound.  I was able to proof and the novel from Prologue to Chapter 13, which is where I had left off.  I am feeling uneasy about this one.  It is set up to be a world and character building story, with the main antagonist showing up in the last third of the book.  It is a setup for the third novel.

In addition to all of that I have been getting my shop in order so that I can work on some woodworking projects over the winter.  I want to build one of those dice games where you flip over the numbered tiles.  I made one in high school and I’d like to try again.  I’m hoping my experience will make it easier.

My son has started working!  It’s his first job and he’s at the local Taco Bell.  I couldn’t be more proud of him!  He was in contact with someone who has Covid!  Crap!  Well we were all in “quarantine” over Thanksgiving.  No one got it, including him!

I am going to continue writing in this blog as an exercise to keep the writing muscles flexed!  I am not sure if I’ll do it daily or bi-weekly, but I am going to keep trying!

Till we meet again!

Who’s your president? I don’t know either….

Well, this sucks.

We just had the 2020 Presidential Election and what a cluster fudge it is. It is Donald Trump v. Joe Biden. I never in a million years would have considered aligning myself with one party or another, but I’ll be damned, I am more a Republican than a Democrat.

I won’t go into why I didn’t support Biden, but suffice it to say, I will not support a man who exhibits pedophile like behavior and blatantly takes monies from an outside source such as China.

We are 4 days removed from the voting day and we are still waiting to find out which candidate has won. The Democrats are obviously trying their damnedest to rig this election with the mail in voting even though the majority of the country has voted for Trump! I hate the electoral college process and I hope that the outcome of this election will spark some change.

Girl Scout Weekend

Good Afternoon Faithful followers!

I spent this weekend with my kids friends in my house and yard!  They played in the sprinklers, the Slip’n’Slide, the wading pool with the puppy and had a water balloon fight!  We then went swimming in my SIL’s pool and had a bonfire where we roasted marshmallows and attempted to make S’mores!  Later the girls spent the night in the giant green Coleman tent.  The next day we spent most of it ferrying huge bags of empty pop bottles, cans and beer bottles to another house for storage.  This is for a fund raiser for the Girl Scout troop that my wife and daughter are in.  I am still feeling the effects.  It was a fun filled and busy weekend!  I did tweak by back, either by riding in my son’s car or trying to do a front flip into the pool, and instead of a nice smooth landing, I back slapped.  Hard.  It was stinging and red.  Hurt like a sum bitch!

Other than all of that, I did manage to get my tools put away from our last camping trip and I am looking forward to our next one!  We will be heading up north, to Timber Ridge RV Resort in Traverse City, MI!  Whoo!  I am already putting together a list of items to pack!

One major change to the blog site is that I didn’t know I could set the maximum number of characters on the main blog screen!  I thought I was limited to only 300 characters!  I bumped it up to 500!  Take that!

Writing can take a lot out of you.

Good Morning and Salutations,

I spent four to five hours writing the outline to book yesterday.  I made some pretty good headway, but when I got to the chapter dealing with the death of a spouse, I found it to be really draining.  The emotions that I have to evoke on the page are depressing and dark.  I am not done with that section, since I will have to write it out in full later.  I had to quit for the day.  It was too much.  I don’t really know how other writers can get in that headspace time after time.  I don’t like and I hope I won’t have to go there again.

I am totally looking forward to this weekend.  It is supposed to be nice weather and my daughter will be camping outside with 2 of her friends.  It looks like this COVID-19 thing is starting to wind down.  The number of deaths and positive infections are declining.  Whoo Hoo!

On a more positive note, my teeny-tiny vegetable garden is growing well.  I am so excited about the green bean buds and about my cucumber plants!  Until next week my friends!

Writing With A Wrist Brace Is Hard Work!

Today’s entry is all about trying to write with a wrist brace.  I am not just talking about writing with a pen or pencil, but typing even!  I can type fairly well, albeit much more slowly with the brace on.  Writing with a pen or pencil is just plain grueling!  I have to use a wide barrel pen to even grip the stupid thing!  Again, I’ll state for the record, that getting old sucks!

Sorry for all of the griping lately.  Just needed to vent.  Work is wearing me down along with the physical maladies isn’t putting me in a great mood.  I just want some time to sit and write my book. In peace and quiet, with no distractions or interruptions.  I have been having some good ideas and I need 3-4 hours of ME time to get back into the world and get them down.

Maybe next week…..*sigh

Aging and Aches and Pains

Ooof.  Good morning faithful readers.  I am feeling it today.  I spent the weekend giving of my time to others.  Which is always fulfilling, but there is always price to be paid.  I spent Saturday driving around town gathering supplies to build herb garden planter kits for my daughters Girl Scout troop.  My wife had come up with the idea and thought that I could help.

I also had to get new lawnmower blades for my mother’s riding mower.  After 2 hours of shopping, then 2 hours of blade replacement and various other handyman tasks there.  I was spent.

Then Sunday was spent building the kits parts and then building one with my little girl.  So yeah, I guess I have carpal tunnel issues and now have to spend the rest of the week wearing a wrist brace.  Aging sucks.  Arthritis sucks too.  (my fingers on my right hand are tight and painful).
Who said that we have to get older?  I didn’t sign up for this!
