Writing With Eye Issues

Hello loyal reader, I am continuing to write this blog to hone my writing skills and to keep a rudimentary journal of my life for my kids and future generations.

I had a surgical procedure performed on my left eye last Friday, April 30th. It was relatively minor, just a Chalazion (pronounced with a SH sound) that was growing out of the lower left corner of my eye lid. It was a damn nuisance, and I am glad that it is gone. I am now left with a constant dull pain every time I blink but it is diminishing. Outside of that, my vision in my left eye is still giving me trouble. It appears that I suffer from an astigmatism that is aggravated by staring at my iPhone and iPad. I don’t seem to have any issues with it when I stare at my computer screen. There is a name for it, Computer Vision Syndrome.

Apparently it is mostly due to a decrease in blinking and the eye drying out along with constant focus on an object too close to the face. I already suffer from dry eyes and I recognize the time spent at the computer screen is excessive.

To combat this issue, the Dr’s suggest implementing the 20-20-20 rule I found at the Cleveland Clinic website. It states that after 20 minutes of screen time I should look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. 20-20-20. Seems pretty easy. I have already tried this for one day, and I am skeptical but hopeful. The dartboard hanging on the opposite wall is over 20 feet away but the numbers are clearly readable. That is my focal point. Now to remember to look over there every twenty minutes.

In addition to the 20-20-20 rule, I should also take a 15 minute break for every 2 hours of screen time and blink WAY more often. Talk about a hassle. I have to be conscious of how much I blink in a given day! Exhausting!

As for this weekend, I did get some writing in. It was quite difficult as I had just had my eye procedure and my astigmatism was flaring really badly. I think it may have been a combination of the glare, not blinking enough and the procedure. I didn’t let it stop me though! The prison story line/plot is moving along nicely. I think I need to rewrite a few chapters a bit better but otherwise it is pretty good. I completed approximately 15 pages and am sitting in the low 200 page range! Whoo-hoo! Progress!

TTFN!
